About Milo

History
Milo is a full-blood Border Collie. He was bred by Terry Cummings in Fairbanks, Alaska. Milo was born on December 2, 2003 and arrived in Juneau on February 2, 2004. Coming from extremely strong working stock, Milo is the first in his bloodline to be born in the United States. He is registered with the American Border Collie Association, which lists four generations of Milo’s ancestry, including two National Sheepdog Champions of Great Britain. (see Milo's pedigree)

Activities
Milo enjoys fetching tennis balls, his Flying Squirrel and tugging with his Kong and rope. He graduated from the Capital Kennel Club of Juneau's Puppy Kindergarten at three months-old. On May 29th Milo tested and passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen examination. Milo trains for search and rescue work at least two sessions per week. Workouts last about 40 minutes each. During the ski season. Milo spends most of his free time at Eaglecrest Ski Area with AvaDogs where he splits his workouts between wilderness searching and avalanche. During work hours, Milo hangs out at the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game while Jim works. Milo enjoys chewing on Greenies, ice cubes and pig ears. He enjoys classical music, Willie Nelson and Scottish Bagpipes.

Family & Friends
Milo lives with his handler/owner, Jim Craig, Jim’s wife Alena Craigova, their daughter, Lenka along with his two cat friends, Lucy and Pepper-Ann. Milo is a very friendly dog and is especially fond of women.
Milo’s primary veterinarian is Rachel Berngartt. Rachel monitors Milo on a regular basis.

Interesting Facts
As of Nov. 25th, 2004, Milo has a top speed of just over 28 mph (speed measured with a GPS taped to his harness) and weighs 50 lbs. Milo eats two meals per day of Science Diet Lamb & Rice Formula along with canned coho salmon. Milo was neutered on April 16, 2004. Milo prefers cooler weather and loves the snow. He took his first chairlift ride on February 14th, 2004 and his first snowmobile ride on April 10th, 2004. Milo was the first dog in Alaska to be nationally certified as a search and rescue dog in Wilderness Area Search and Avalanche Rescue by the National Association for Search and Rescue.
